What is HERS Testing?
The Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) Program tests and rates the energy efficiency of a home. The California Energy Commission's HERS Program addresses construction defects and poor equipment installation, including HVAC systems and insulation. Depending on the scope of work performed HERS testing is required under the California Building Energy Efficiency Standards - Title 24, Section 6. HERS testing verifies proper equipment installation, reducing energy costs, improving indoor quality, and insuring the return on your investment.
What HERS Tests are Required For My Home?
The scope of work and climate zone of the project location will determine what tests are required. Any HVAC alteration will require at the very least a Duct Leakage Test. Other HVAC tests could be required depending on installed / altered system components such as Air Conditioning and New Ducting. For Newly Constructed Homes and or Existing with Addition / Alterations projects (aka E+A+A's) your Title 24 Analysis will determine what features need to be tested and or documented. Please call us for consultation on Newly Constructed Homes and Additions. If you've only had an HVAC alteration performed you can click here to see a CalCERTS HERS Verification Table to determine what tests will be required.
How Long Does the Inspection / Testing Take?
HERS testing and inspections can take as little as 30 minutes or up to 2 hours. Some Inspections such as Quality Insulation Installation Inspections can involve up to 4 separate site visit inspections at different points of the construction process.
